That guy who swore by lighter fluid for cleaning mirror boxes almost cost me a shutter assembly

Fellow at the camera swap meet told me a little Ronsonol on a Q-tip was the trick for stubborn haze, but I tried it on a parts body first and the residue ate through the foam seal and gummed up the mirror box in under a week, has anyone else run into this kind of bad advice from old timers?

Oh man, that lighter fluid advice is a classic trap. Ngl, I had a guy at a flea market swear by brake cleaner for cleaning lenses and I thought he was joking until he pulled out a can. Honestly, I've learned the hard way that most of those old school solvent tricks ruin more than they fix, better to stick with the basic stuff like isopropyl and patience.

Fair enough but sometimes the old tricks work fine if you know what you're doing.

Wait you actually had someone recommend brake cleaner on a lens? That's wild, I can't believe people still push those old solvent tricks without mentioning the risks. Sorry you had to deal with that lighter fluid mess, that's a rough lesson to learn the hard way.
