I swore I'd never touch a camera with water damage, then a guy in Des Moines proved me wrong
For 18 years I turned away every water logged body that came through my bench. Last March a regular brought in a Canon 5D Mark III that sat in a flooded basement for two days, and I finally said yes just to see what would happen. I figured I'd have it sorted in a weekend. It took me 11 weeks, mostly because the corrosion kept showing up in new spots every time I thought I was done, first the ribbon cables, then the shutter magnet, then a ground contact buried under the sensor board. I ended up using an ultrasonic cleaner for the first time and replacing 14 screws that had basically turned to chalk. I still don't love taking these jobs, but I was wrong that they're always a lost cause. Anybody got a checklist they run through on flood damage before quoting?
