Walked into an old bookstore downtown and saw something I haven't spotted in years
I stopped by Benson's Used Books on 5th Street last weekend, the place that's been there since the 70s, and noticed the owner was still using a handwritten ledger for his sales instead of a computer or tablet. He told me he's been doing it that way for 42 years and never bothered switching because "the system works" even as foot traffic has dropped by about 30 percent since 2019. Has anyone else run into small businesses that refuse to update their methods, or am I just getting old and nostalgic about paper?

Did you ever think it was just stubbornness before talking to him? I was the same way, always figured these guys were just refusing to move with the times. But last month I watched an old cobbler in my neighborhood fix a pair of boots using nothing but a hammer and a last he'd had since the 80s. He finished in ten minutes and the repair looked better than anything I've gotten from a machine. Sometimes the old way really is just the right way for that person.
