Client ghosted me after approving a $4k invoice

Sitting in a coffee shop in Austin last Thursday, I pulled up their bank to confirm the payment and saw the invoice still marked pending, then 45 minutes later they stopped answering my calls. What do you do when a signed contract means nothing, ask for a deposit up front next time or chase them legally, anyone dealt with this?

$4k is a lot of money to just let slide. I'd send one final invoice with a clear late fee note, then small claims court if they still dodge you. Signed contracts are only as good as the paper they're printed on, lesson learned. Half up front forever now, no exceptions. People treat invoices like suggestions until their credit takes a hit.

Ever had a client pay you in gift cards before? Because that's how I ended up with a drawer full of Starbucks cards from a guy who swore up and down he'd wire the money "next week." Different situation, but yeah, chasing people for cash is the worst part of this gig. Hope they come through eventually.
