Can we talk about when a 'growth hack' totally backfires?

I tried running a 'free webinar' to get leads for my consulting service. I spent a week making slides and promoting it, but only 7 people showed up live. The weird part? I got 47 sign-ups who just wanted the recording link, and none of them have replied to my follow-up emails. I learned that a big list doesn't mean an engaged audience. Has anyone else had a webinar flop and found a better way to connect with people?

My last webinar flopped too, so I switched to small, paid workshops with only ten people.

Ever notice how free stuff attracts the wrong crowd? It's like putting out a free buffet, you get people who just want a free meal, not the ones who value what you're serving. That's why I'm leaning towards small, paid groups now too.

I started capping my workshops at 12 people and charging $15 each, and @rowan593 you're right, it filters out the lookie-loos completely. The quality of discussion went up, people actually showed up on time, and they engaged way more with the content. Small paid groups just have a different vibe that makes everything run smoother.
