Question about using a separate checking account for bills

I got tired of scrambling to cover rent and utilities, so I opened a second checking account at my credit union. Every payday, I have an automatic transfer send $850 to that account, which covers my fixed expenses. It's been three months and I haven't had a single late fee. Has anyone else tried this with a different bank or setup?

My friend does this with a Capital One account.

That's interesting because Capital One has been pushing their own shopping portal pretty hard lately. Makes me wonder if they're trying to lock people into their own ecosystem for the extra points. Could be a smart play by them to keep the rewards in-house.
