Question about a budgeting trick I saw at a garage sale in Tempe

I watched a guy there pay for a $15 tool box with exact change he'd saved in a jar all month, which made me start a 'cash only' jar for small weekend buys so I don't touch my card.

That "exact change in a jar" thing is a whole mood. My version is a coffee can of fives for taco truck runs, but last month I accidentally used it to buy a weird garden gnome at 2 am. My budget did not feel respected.

Honestly I read this article about how cash jars work like a mental speed bump for spending. It said your brain feels the money leaving more when it's physical, so you buy less dumb stuff. Tbh that totally tracks with my own coffee cash stash, I'm way pickier with those dollars. Ngl though the garden gnome story is a perfect example of the system failing at a weak moment. The article basically said you gotta keep the jar out of easy reach for it to really work.
