My sister said she budgets $0 for surprises each month and I can't stop thinking about it
She put it flat out over coffee in Rochester: a surprise expense isn't an emergency if you already know surprises happen. So I added a $75 "stuff happens" line to my budget, and guess what, the car tag renewal that used to wreck me last month barely stung. What do you all call that line in your own budgets?
Man, $75 a month for "stuff happens"? That's $900 a year just sitting there waiting to get spent. Car tag renewal isn't a surprise, it's a bill you get every single year on the same month. Same with registration, insurance, Christmas, back to school. Those aren't surprises, that's just life on a schedule. A real surprise is your water heater dying or your kid breaking an arm. If you're tucking away cash for stuff you already know is coming, you're not being clever, you're just bad at planning ahead. Call it what it is and save yourself the fancy name.
