My brother swore the 50/30/20 rule was a waste, but I proved him wrong
He told me last January that splitting my pay that way was too rigid and I'd never stick to it. I started anyway, putting $400 into savings first, $240 on needs like rent and groceries, and the rest on fun stuff. Six months later I had $2,400 saved up for a trip to Austin while he was still living paycheck to paycheck. Has anyone else found that rule actually works better than people give it credit for?

Jumped into the 50/30/20 rule myself last year and saw the same thing happen. It's funny how people swear simple systems don't work, yet they're the ones drowning in overdraft fees and takeout receipts. I've noticed this pattern with all kinds of basic advice, like meal prepping or walking for exercise. Everyone wants some fancy hack or secret formula, but the boring stuff like just moving your money before you can spend it is what actually adds up. Your brother probably thought it was too easy to be real, but that's exactly why it works. Sometimes the most obvious answers are the ones people fight the hardest.

My mortgage lender did the math and showed me that even with a strict budget, I was still paying more in interest than I was saving with the 50/30/20 rule. The problem is that rule doesn't account for things like variable income or surprise expenses, so it can leave you short if you're not careful. Isn't it more about having a system that fits your actual life rather than just following a generic split?
