My aunt told me to track every dollar for a month, and I thought she was nuts

Back in college, my aunt sat me down and said to just write down every single thing I spent money on for 30 days, no matter how small. I was broke in Phoenix, living on instant noodles, and thought it was a huge waste of time. I did it anyway, grudgingly, and was shocked to see I was dropping almost $80 a month just on coffee and vending machine snacks between classes. That was my grocery money. Seeing it all on paper made it real. I started making coffee at home and packing snacks, and that extra cash got me through the last two weeks of the semester without stressing. It felt so basic, but it totally changed how I see my spending. Has anyone else had a simple piece of advice like that actually work for them?

Yeah, my friend did something similar and it blew his mind too. He read this article about "latte factor" spending, which is basically what you found with the coffee and snacks. It's crazy how those tiny buys add up so fast without you even noticing. I get what @jenny_jackson is saying about the lesson sticking, because once you see it, you can't unsee it. I'm way more aware now before I just tap my card for a small treat.

Tracking every dollar seems so simple, but it really does force you to face the truth. Did you keep up the habit after that first month, or did the lesson stick even without writing it all down?
