My $60 hot water heater timer paid for itself in 3 weeks
Our electric bill hit $312 last month in Austin, way over usual. I found out the tank was running every hour even when we were asleep or at work. Grabbed a cheap timer from the hardware store on Burnet Road and set it to run only 6am-9am and 6pm-10pm. Has anyone else tried this and seen a similar drop, or am I missing hidden costs like the tank cooling faster?

Honestly, that's a solid move for Austin. The tank will cool some overnight, but it's usually not a huge deal if it's insulated. Just make sure the timer is rated for the amperage, those cheap ones can fry if the element pulls too hard. Also, check if you have a heat pump model, they sometimes need different wiring and a dumb timer can mess with it.
