Had to choose between a new washer and fixing my old one

My washing machine started making this awful grinding noise two months ago. I called a repair guy and he quoted me $450 to fix the drum bearings. Then I looked at new machines and saw a basic model for $550. I went with the repair since it was cheaper upfront and I figured the old machine was built better. Well, it broke down again last week with a different issue, this time the control board. Now I'm kicking myself because I could have put that $450 toward a new washer with a warranty. Has anyone else dealt with this kind of decision where the cheaper fix ends up costing more in the long run?

That repair guy probably knew the machine was on its last legs but didn't say anything, right? I've been there with a fridge where I poured money into fixes until the compressor finally gave out. Did you ever ask around or check reviews to see if that model was known for dying young?

@samward yeah those Samsung fridges are notorious for compressor failure.
