Fridge compressor died on a 95 degree day - had to borrow $600 for the repair

Last Tuesday the compressor in my 12 year old fridge finally gave out. Of course it happened during a heat wave and I had a full freezer of meat and veggies. Called three repair places and the cheapest quote was $600. Ended up asking my brother for a short term loan since my emergency fund was already tapped from a car repair last month. The fridge is working now but I'm kicking myself for not having a separate appliance repair fund. Anyone else had a big unexpected expense throw off their whole monthly budget?

Oh man, I feel this in my bones! The same thing happened to me a couple years ago with our washing machine. What ended up working was I started putting aside a flat $25 every single paycheck into a separate savings account I called "house crap fund." It's not much but it's built up enough over time that the next time something breaks I won't have to panic or borrow.

Feel you @kelly.emma, that "house crap fund" idea is honestly genius and I'm kicking myself for not doing it sooner.
