Used to torque lug nuts with my foot, now I carry a proper torque wrench

Back when I first started doing brake jobs in my driveway in Austin, I would just crank the lug nuts with a breaker bar until they felt 'tight enough.' That worked fine until I warped a rotor on my old Civic because I overtightened one side, and the car shook like crazy at 70 mph. About 3 years ago I bought a decent click-type torque wrench for $45, and now I always do two passes in a star pattern, 80 ft-lbs for my current car. Has anyone else ruined a rotor or hub from guessing on lug nut torque, or am I the only one who learned this the hard way?
