Took my old truck to a brake shop in rural Nebraska and got an education
I stopped at a small-town garage outside of Kearney last month because my F-150 was grinding something awful. The old mechanic pulled off the pads and showed me how the inner pad wore down to the metal while the outer pad still looked nearly new. He said it was a stuck caliper slide pin, and he fixed it in about 15 minutes for $30 labor. Has anyone else dealt with uneven pad wear like that, or am I the only one who didn't know slide pins need greasing every so often?

Clark, I'd say "overthinking" is a strong word for a guy who just learned something new. I read a piece in a car magazine once that said most brake shops see this exact problem on older trucks that have never had their caliper pins cleaned. The author made the point that it's one of those simple maintenance items that gets overlooked because nobody thinks about it until the brakes start making noise. It's not about the money, it's about knowing your truck better so you can catch stuff before it turns into a bigger job. That old mechanic probably saved that guy from replacing calipers down the road, which would have cost a lot more than thirty bucks.
