TIL my buddy's brake dust complaint saved me $180 in rotors
Last week my friend Dan kept bitching about brown dust on his alloys, so I finally checked mine and the pads were down to 2mm with hot spots starting on the rotors. He never mentioned the pulsing pedal, just the dust, but that one hint made me pull the wheels off in my driveway in St. Paul before a 400 mile trip. Anyone else ignore the cosmetic stuff until it turns into a metal-on-metal mess, or am I the only one who needed that nudge?

Quit staring at the wheels and start listening for that grinding sound when you brake. I did the same thing on my old F-150, ignored the squeal for like two weeks because I figured it was just dust or moisture. By the time I finally got under it, the pads were totally gone and the rotors looked like a scratched CD. Ended up replacing both sides and the calipers had to be cleaned too because the metal shavings got everywhere. That cheap fix turned into a $400 job real quick. So yeah, you got lucky your buddy mentioned the dust, some of us have to learn the hard way.
