The $45 metal shim pack that silenced my rear squeal for real this time
My 2017 Civic started squealing like a dying bird every time I braked slowly at intersections near downtown Austin, so I tore it apart twice and greased everything twice still no luck. Then a buddy at the shop said try metal shims instead of the rubber ones that came with the pads, so I dropped $45 on a universal kit from the local parts store and slapped them on last Saturday. Has anyone else had factory rubber shims just flat out not work on their daily driver, or was my setup just cursed?

My 2015 Mazda 3 did the exact same thing with the factory rubber shims, drove me nuts for two months. Tried the grease trick and even new caliper pins, nothing helped. Once I swapped to the metal shims from a brake kit at AutoZone it was dead silent within a day, no squeal at all since. Maybe it's just the way the rubber ones flex and trap grit on certain caliper designs, but metal feels like the fix.
