That time a wood block saved my weekend brake job
Was doing a full pad and rotor swap on my '05 Civic last Saturday. Got everything apart fine but couldn't for the life of me get the caliper piston to compress. Tried the C-clamp method, even rented the tool from AutoZone. Then my neighbor walks over, hands me a scrap 2x4 block and says "wedge this between the old pad and the piston, then use your regular clamp." Worked like magic in 2 minutes. Guess I was overcomplicating it. Anyone else got a weird trick that saved a brake job?

My buddy had that same issue on his Accord and we spent like 45 minutes cussing at it with a rented tool that wouldn't budge. Ended up using a hockey puck and a ratchet strap from his garage lmao. Took maybe 2 cranks and the piston slid right in. Sometimes the simplest stuff is what you overlook when you're trying to be all technical with the fancy tools. That wood block trick is definitely getting saved for my next brake job.

Oh man, that hockey puck and ratchet strap trick is genius. I once spent two hours trying to get a stuck caliper piston back in on my old Camry, and I ended up just using a big C-clamp and a piece of 2x4 from my neighbor's scrap pile. The thing finally gave in after I yelled at it for a solid five minutes. I swear, sometimes the most ridiculous backyard fixes work better than anything from the auto parts store. My wife still laughs at me whenever she sees me walk out to the garage with random sports equipment or lumber. Guess I'm not the only one who's resorted to some pretty questionable hacks just to finish a brake job.
