Saw a guy burn through rotors in 9 months at a Utah brake shop

Stopped into a shop outside of Moab last month for a quick pad check. There's a Jeep sitting up on the lift with rotors that looked like a cheese grater after only 9 months. Owner swears he drives easy, but the guy behind the counter asked one question: "You been riding your brakes down the canyon passes?" Turns out the answer was yes, every single weekend. That's not a pad problem, that's a driving habit problem. Why do people treat downhill grades like a stop-and-go city street? Downshift, let the engine do the work, save your pads and rotors for the flat stuff. Has anyone else watched their brake life double after they stopped riding the pedal on long descents?
