Pro tip: the $12 brake pad spreader I grabbed at Harbor Freight saved my knuckles twice this winter
Last week I was doing the rear pads on my 2014 Civic in my unheated garage in Minneapolis when my C-clamp slipped and I nearly lost a fingertip. I had been using the same rusty clamp for 3 years because I thought a real spreader tool was a waste of money. After the slip I drove to Harbor Freight and spent $12 on their ratcheting pad spreader, and it took me 4 minutes to compress both calipers instead of the usual 15 minute fight. The pads seated perfectly and the pedal felt firm right away. My question is, does anyone use the screw-in style for rear calipers with the parking brake built in, or do you just rent the kit from AutoZone? I want to know before I do my wife's CR-V next weekend.
