Pro tip: a $9 tube of brake grease fixed my 4 year caliper squeal in one afternoon
I put off pulling the wheel for 4 years because I figured the noise meant new calipers, but the slider pins were dry as a bone. Has anyone else had a squeal that turned out to be a 10 minute fix?
Got lucky on that one. Dry slider pins are cheap to fix but they are not always the whole story. A squeal can also come from worn pads that have a wear tab scraping, a warped rotor, or even a wheel bearing starting to go. And sometimes the noise comes back a week later because the pin is pitted or the boot is torn, so the grease is only a band aid. Acting like everyone can skip the brake shop and just lube it up is how people end up with a caliper that locks up on the highway. Get it checked if the sound keeps coming back.
