Brake pad sensor wire got sheared off by the caliper on a 2012 Focus

I was doing a rear pad swap on my wife's Focus last Saturday in our driveway. When I pulled the caliper off, the sensor wire had been pinched between the caliper bracket and the inner pad for who knows how long. It was completely severed, probably from a sloppy install at a quick lube place two years back. I just snipped the rest of the wire and tied it up out of the way since the light never came on anyway. For $18 I can grab a new sensor from AutoZone, but is it even worth the hassle if the light is already dead? Has anyone else just run without the wear sensor on a car this old?
