Was I the only one installing bottom brackets wrong for years?

I always torqued my Shimano Hollowtech II bottom brackets to like 50 Nm because I thought tighter was better. Last month I had a customer bring in a creaking bike and the manual said 35-40 Nm max. I backed mine off and the cranks spin way smoother now. Did I mess up other bikes doing it too tight or is more torque fine?

@mitchell.nancy is right, you gave those bearings the equivalent of a hydraulic press lol.

Oh jeez, you basically had those poor bearings under a bear hug. 50 Nm is "send it to the moon" tight, not "right". At least now your cranks spin free, so chalk it up to a learning experience and a few quiet guilty confessions under your breath.
