Thought torque wrenches were overkill for stem bolts until I snapped one on a Tuesday
I used to tighten stem bolts by feel, just crank them down until they felt snug and call it done. Then a customer's carbon steerer cracked on a 2019 Trek Domane because I went past 5Nm without knowing it, and I bought a beam-style wrench the next day. Now I check every single bolt, so what's the one tool you resisted buying for too long?
Man, my buddy learned this the hard way too. He was doing a bar swap on his alloy bike and figured aluminum could take whatever he gave it, so he just leaned on those faceplate bolts. Snapped one clean off mid ride a week later and the bar twisted on him going down a hill. Lucky he didn't eat pavement, but he walked home with a busted bar and a lesson. He picked up a cheap click wrench after that and now he's that guy checking every bolt twice. Funny how one bad moment turns you into a torque nerd for life.
