Pro tip: Grease your seatpost, but not the whole thing

Honestly, I see this at least once a week at the shop. Someone brings in a bike with a seized seatpost, and they tell me they greased it all over. Ngl, you only need a light coat on the lower two-thirds. If you grease the whole length, it can work its way up into the frame and cause a real mess. Has anyone else found a better trick to stop that creep?

I get what you're saying about only greasing the lower part, but I've always put a very thin coat over the whole post. I wipe off almost all of it, so there's just a film left. That way it's protected along its whole length and I've never had it creep up into the frame.

Oh man, I used to be all about greasing the whole thing too. But you're totally right, I've pulled out way too many posts that had grease all the way up and it just made a nasty mess inside the frame. Definitely switching to your method next time lol.

Honestly, that reminds me of the time I greased a quill stem too much and it shot up like a rocket.
