Had a vintage quill stem fail on a customer's bike last Tuesday. The wedge bolt snapped clean through.

A clean snap is right, blair_lewis85. Makes me think of the time I tried to fix my deck with a rusty old bracket from the shed. Thing looked solid, then just gave up and popped when I leaned on the rail. That's vintage metal for you, it gets tired in secret. You trust it right up until the second you're picking pieces off the floor.

Tell you what @wright.dakota, I've been the bracket in that story more times than I'd like to admit. Look fine on the outside, then crack under pressure. My wife says it's my life motto.
