Dropped $60 on a proper chain checker tool and it's already paid for itself

I used to just eyeball chain wear (you know, the old lift-and-look method). Two chains and a cassette later I realized I was replacing stuff way too early or letting it go too far. The Park Tool CC-3.2 is what I got. After one check on my commuter, I saw the chain was at 0.75% and had about 50 miles left before it trashed everything. That cassette would have been another $50 easy. Has anyone else had a cheap tool save them money like that?

Heard about a guy who used the penny trick for years and ended up wrecking his whole drivetrain. Those simple tools really do pay off fast when you see the actual numbers. Worth every penny compared to guessing.

See this ALL the time in basically EVERYTHING people try to cheap out on. Everyone thinks they're smarter than the people who actually designed the tool or the system, and they end up paying way more in the long run. It's the same reason people ignore their check engine light or use the wrong kind of fluid in their car. A little bit of upfront cost or effort saves you a MASSIVE headache and a ton of cash later on. It's like that old saying about being penny wise and pound foolish, it really does apply to almost everything.
