Appreciation post: Hit 500 bottom bracket overhauls this year

I was cleaning my bench last night and counted the old cartridge bearings in my scrap bin. There were over 500 of them, which means I've done that many BB jobs since January. It surprised me because our shop in Tacoma doesn't even specialize in that. It made me realize how much of our work is just basic maintenance that people put off. What's your most common 'put-off' repair that you end up doing constantly?

Have you checked if that "rusty slinky" chain was actually original from the factory? I see chains that look like they've been sitting in a tide pool for years, and usually it's because people just keep adding lube without ever cleaning the old gunk off first. A good soak in some simple green and a stiff brush can bring most chains back to life unless the rust has pitted the metal deep. If the links are stiff and won't move freely even after cleaning, then yeah you're probably looking at a new chain and cassette. But most folks just need to scrub the grime off and relube properly.

My buddy's chain looked like a rusted slinky.

Hey @rivera.holly, wasn't that probably his derailleur, not the chain?
