A customer's comment made me rethink my chain cleaning method
A regular at our shop in Boulder told me my ultrasonic cleaner was just moving gunk around, not removing it. He showed me his chain after using a simple Park Tool brush and degreaser, and it was way cleaner than mine. I switched to scrubbing each link by hand before the ultrasonic bath. Has anyone else found a better pre-clean step?

Moving gunk around" is a perfect way to describe my old method too. I mean, my ultrasonic cleaner was basically just a fancy soup maker. A quick scrub first saves so much time.

Used to think the ultrasonic did it all, but a good pre-scrub really does make a difference.

People are acting like this is some kind of life changing revelation. It's just chain cleaning. I've been using an ultrasonic cleaner for years and never had a single issue with shifting or wear. A little bit of leftover gunk never hurt anybody. I'd rather spend those extra minutes riding than scrubbing individual links like some kind of bicycle monk. If your chain is really that dirty after an ultrasonic bath, maybe you're not letting it run long enough or your solution is old. Not everything has to be some elaborate multi step process.
