Dropped $200 on a smoker mod that did nothing
Bought a fancy tuning plate for my offset thinking it would fix hot spots. All it did was rust up in two cooks, any of you guys find a cheap fix that actually works?

Can confirm, those tuning plates are a total scam half the time. Got one for my Oklahoma Joe and it warped within a month. Honestly, just grabbed a stack of cheap firebricks from a landscaping place and laid them in the cook chamber to even out the heat. Works way better than any metal plate I've tried and cost like 15 bucks.

Yeah, "total scam" is right, I had the same thing happen with a cheap plate from Amazon, warped on the first long cook. Firebricks are the way to go, I did the same thing and the heat stays way more steady across the whole grate. Just make sure you get the soft firebricks not the hard ones, those can hold too much moisture and crack.
