The polite note that fixed my roommate's 2 AM drumming habit, but now I feel like a jerk for it

I tried the loud confrontation route for 5 months with my drummer roommate in Austin and it just made things worse, so I switched to a sticky note on his amp saying 'walls are thin, neighbors called twice' and he actually stopped. But now my other roommate says the note was passive aggressive and I should've just talked to him face to face, so which side wins: direct but awkward or quiet and effective?
