My roommate replaced the shared trash bags with thin ones from a dollar store and now I am the bad guy
So my roommate and I had a deal where we split trash duty and buy the bags together. About 5 weeks ago he started buying these super thin off brand bags that rip if you look at them wrong, and I told him we should go back to the thicker ones we used for a year with zero issues. He said I was being picky and that saving $4 a box mattered more than my "feelings." Well, 3 days ago a bag tore in the hallway and left a trail of old takeout juice from our door all the way to the elevator. The building manager sent a $150 cleaning bill and my roommate wants me to pay half. I compared the cheap ones against the normal ones side by side and the cheap ones are basically tissue paper. How do I get him to split this bill when it was his bag that failed? Has anyone dealt with a roommate who cheapens out on shared stuff and then blames you when it breaks?
Had a buddy deal with this exact thing last year. His roommate bought these flimsy bags that split every time you lifted them, and my friend kept saying lets just spend the extra few bucks, but the guy would not budge. Then one night the bag broke on the stairs and dumped greasy chinese food all over the carpet, and the landlord charged them $200. The roommate tried to say they should split it since they both use the trash, which is total nonsense. My friend told him flat out that he argued against the cheap bags and got ignored, so the mess was on the guy who picked them. They ended up going halfsies just to keep the peace, but it still bugs him. Stand your ground on this one, you told him the bags were junk and he basically said your feelings did not matter, so his cheap choice, his bill.
