My old roommate swore we were "basically brothers" until I asked him to cover $40 of the cable bill
A buddy from my old apartment complex in Sacramento brought up roommates over coffee last week and it got me thinking about how I used to see the whole thing back in the day. When I moved in with a guy back in 2019 I figured we were friends, so why bother with a written agreement or a shared spreadsheet? It felt cold, like I was calling him a crook before he even did anything. Then the electric bill hit $210 in August and he flat out said "I run hot, you run cold, so you owe more" and I realized friendship and fairness were two different things. What got me was my buddy saying his current roommate keeps a shared notes app with every bill split down to the penny, and they get along great. Back when I was 23 I would've called that petty. Now I think the spreadsheet is the reason they're still friends. So here's my question for the folks who lived through the messy version like I did: did you ever get a written deal going after the fact, and did it actually help or did it just make things weird?
