Warning: my 24 inch level said my shelf was flat, it wasn't even close

I hung 6 floating shelves in my shop using only a 2 foot level and a tape measure, then checked them with a 4 foot straightedge and every single one was off by at least a quarter inch. What's the cheapest way to check long runs without buying a laser level?
