Update: I glued 14 poplar boards into a countertop and it cupped so bad my shop stool rolls away on its own
So I built this butcher block style desk top for my brother in law in Rochester, and I was pretty proud of it until about a week later. I glued up 14 strips of poplar, clamped them with every bar clamp I own, and sanded it for what felt like forever. Then it sat in his spare room near a radiator (which, yeah, I now realize was the worst possible spot) and it cupped into a shape I can only call a shallow taco. The middle lifted about 3/8 of an inch, so now his mouse pad slides downhill and his coffee mug drifts toward the edge like it has somewhere to be. I flipped the boards end to end when I glued up, or at least I thought I did, but clearly one or two went in with the grain running the wrong way. What got me was I never sealed the underside, so the top dried out way faster than the bottom and it curled right up. My plan is to rip the whole thing down the middle, flip one half, and re-glue with biscuits, but I am not sure that fixes anything if I still skip a finish on both faces. Has anyone saved a cupped glue up this way, or am I better off just starting over with a plywood core and a thin top?
