Hot take: that $60 laser level from Harbor Freight is why my tile job looks drunk
I laid 140 sq ft of 12x24 tile in my bathroom last month and figured I could just eyeball the lines off the wall like the guy on YouTube did. Turns out my walls are off by almost 3/8 inch over 8 feet, so every row drifted and the grout lines wander like a river by the time I hit the shower curb. Anyone else get burned trusting a wall as a straight edge, or am I the only one who should've dropped 60 bucks on a laser from the start?

Wall being out by 3/8 over 8 feet is normal, not a fluke. Houses settle and framing is never perfect, so any wall you check will be off some. That means a laser does not really fix it either, it just shows you how bad the wall is. The trick most guys use is to snap a chalk line off the wall first to find your true reference, then set the laser or tile to that line instead of the wall. $60 laser is handy but it will not save you if you are still lining up to a wall that was never straight.
