Guy at the Duluth lumber yard caught the one thing wrong with my garage workbench before I even asked
I built a 6 foot workbench in my garage last fall and thought it was solid until a guy at the lumber yard in Duluth pointed at the legs and said my 2x4s were bowing toward the wall. He walked me over to his own truck and showed me how he notches the bottom of each leg so the weight sits on the floor instead of flexing the screws. He said he learned that after his own bench collapsed under a 200 pound engine block in 2018. I redid mine the next weekend with notched legs and a 2x6 cross brace, and it has not moved a hair since. Cost me 12 bucks in extra wood and about 40 minutes. Now I am second guessing the plywood top, it is just 3/4 inch and I can see it dip when I lean on it. Has anyone here doubled up their top or is a single sheet fine if you add a center support?
