Custom deck board gap critique changed my spacing method

I put down 400 square feet of cedar decking with a 16d nail gap, thought it looked tight and clean until a guy on here said it would trap moisture and rot by the third season. He showed me pics of his own deck after two winters with that spacing and the boards had cupped bad, so I ripped up half the run and reset everything to a proper 3/8 inch gap with spacers. Anyone else get basic spacing wrong the first time and have to redo it?
