Unpopular opinion: the old guy who told me to stop using an impact gun on lug nuts was right
When I was 19 and working at a tire shop in Gary, a guy named Ray who had been turning wrenches since the 70s told me to put the impact down and torque wheels by hand. I thought he was just old and slow, so I kept zipping lugs on with the gun at full blast for another two years. Then I warped a set of rotors on a customer's Civic and had to eat the $180 in parts myself. These days I spin them on with the gun just till they touch and finish every one with a torque wrench, and I've never had a comeback since. Any of you still get grief from the young guys about doing it the slow way?
