Unpopular opinion: a $12 torque wrench adapter at a garage sale in Gary taught me to stop guessing
Was at a garage sale off Route 20 in Gary last weekend and an old timer sold me a torque wrench adapter for $12, then showed me how he marks bolts with a paint pen after he sets them. Been doing head bolts by feel for years and just did a Subaru HG job where I checked every one twice, all within spec. Any of you use the paint pen trick or do you just trust the click?
Man, I heard a machinist on a podcast say the same thing, that the click is just the start and the mark is your proof. He said he marks every bolt so when he comes back later he knows which ones got done and which ones he still needs to hit. That paint pen deal sounds cheap and easy and I might grab one next time I'm at the hardware store.
