TIL my neighbor thinks mechanics just guess what's wrong with a car
He said, 'You guys just throw parts at it until it works, right?' while I was fixing his 2012 Civic's alternator in my driveway. I explained the whole diagnostic process with my multimeter and he looked shocked, like he'd never considered we actually test stuff. How do you guys handle people who think our job is just random luck?

I mean, it's not brain surgery though. Sometimes you do just swap a part to see if it fixes it.

Honestly thought the same thing before my car broke down. Watching a mechanic trace a wiring fault with a test light changed my whole view. It's way more like detective work than guessing.
