That salvage yard in Tacoma had a whole wall of old alternators, learned something

Stopped by Pick-n-Pull off of I-5 last Saturday just to grab a wiper motor for my 97 F-150, but ended up walking past this row of late 90s Ford alternators. All of them had the same burnt smell and melted plastic on the connector, which got me thinking about how the voltage regulator on those fails way before the brushes do. Swapped in a junkyard unit from a 2002 Explorer instead, same bolt pattern, and it's been solid for 300 miles. Anyone else find that cross-model trick saves you from paying the $180 reman price at the parts store?
