Talking with a retired diesel mechanic last weekend

Was at a parts store in Cleveland. Old guy next to me said he could rebuild a carburetor blindfolded. Made me think. I can't even adjust a modern throttle body without a laptop. We lost something. He said computers made us lazy fixers. Kinda stung because he's right. Anyone else feel like we traded know-how for scan tools?

Why is it that the old-timers can fix ANYTHING with a wrench and a hammer, but I gotta watch three YouTube videos just to change a sensor? They Figured out engines by feel and sound, and we're over here paying subscription fees for software to tell us what's wrong.

Read somewhere that old mechanics could literally hear a misfire from down the street, @patel.leo. Guess we traded that for the convenience of a check engine light and a monthly subscription fee.
