Shoutout to the old guy at the parts counter who called my work 'fast food mechanic'

I was picking up a timing chain kit for a Honda and he asked if I was doing the guides too. I said no, just the chain, and he looked at me and said 'That's fast food mechanic work, you know the whole meal is bad but you just change the bun.' It hit different because he's been there 30 years and I've been cutting that corner for five. How many of you actually do the full job every time, or do you think he's just old school?

Learned that lesson the hard way myself.

Feel that, @nancy418. It's one of those things you just have to go through to really get it, you know? I mean, no amount of someone telling you about it can prepare you. Makes you a lot more careful going forward, for sure.

Gotta push back on that a little bit. I don't think it's something you have to go through yourself to understand it. I mean, yeah, reading about it won't hit you the same way, but you can learn from other people's mistakes without making your own. Like, I never had to get burned by a bad contractor to know I should check their references first lol. My dad taught me that just by watching him deal with one. Some lessons are way cheaper when you let someone else be the example.
