PSA: I chose to rebuild a 4L60E transmission myself instead of buying a reman unit

It took me three weekends and a $200 specialty tool kit, but I saved over a grand and learned every part of that box. Anyone else gone the full rebuild route on a common trans lately?

That 4L60E rebuild is a solid project to take on. Getting the valve body right was the hardest part for me, but watching a bunch of videos first really helped. Having a clean workspace and taking pictures during tear down saved me a lot of guesswork later. The money saved feels good, but knowing exactly what's inside that case now is even better.

My husband and I rebuilt the 4L80E in our old Suburban last fall. We spent about $400 on parts and a weekend wrestling with the valve body. The feeling when it shifted properly on the first test drive was worth every minute.

Honestly, wrestling with a valve body for a weekend sounds like a special kind of hell to me. I'd rather just pay someone who knows exactly what they're doing.
