Overheard a guy at the parts counter say he'd never check his own brake fluid

Honestly, I was grabbing a set of plugs yesterday and the guy next to me was telling the clerk his car felt 'spongy'. The clerk asked when he last checked his brake fluid and the guy just laughed and said 'Never, that's what I pay you guys for.' Ngl, it stuck with me the whole drive back to the shop. It's not even a hard check, just pop the hood and look at the little clear reservoir. But it made me realize a lot of people see their car as this magic box they can't touch. They'll pay for a full brake job before they'll spend two minutes looking at the fluid level. I get that not everyone wants to get their hands dirty, but basic stuff like that can save them a ton of cash and catch small problems before they get big. Has anyone else had a customer come in with a major issue that started from them just never checking the simple things?

That's just asking for trouble.

What kind of trouble are we talking about? Because my track record shows I'm basically a magnet for it. I'll try something that seems totally fine and still end up in a weird mess. It's like my bad decisions have their own gravitational pull. So honestly, asking for trouble is just my default setting at this point.
