Coil pack died on a highway in Tulsa, then my tow decision got questioned

I was about 30 miles out of Tulsa last Tuesday when the engine started bucking like a horse, threw a P0300 code, and died at a rest stop. My ground cable had corrosion so bad it looked like powdered sugar, and the coil pack was reading 0 ohms across the primary side. I called a buddy who said just replace the pack and drive home, but I paid $140 for a tow instead because I didn't trust the electrical gremlins. He still gives me grief about it, saying I could have limped it 2 miles to an AutoZone. Which would you do, risk the limping or eat the tow bill?

Used to be all about limping things home myself, but hearing you call those electrical gremlins out changed my mind. That corrosion plus a dead coil pack sounds like a rolling fire hazard, so yeah, you made the right call with that tow.
