The neighbor who swore by bare root trees was actually right

My next door guy in Cleveland kept pushing bare root over potted trees, so I tried one apple tree that way last spring and it's already got 4 feet of growth while my $80 potted maple from the nursery is still struggling. Has anyone else had better luck skipping the fancy container trees entirely?
