The guy at the tire shop in Boise told me I was checking my oil wrong, and he was right
I used to check my oil maybe once a month, just pull the stick and glance at it. A mechanic named Dave at a shop on Fairview Ave watched me do it and asked if I ever wiped it first and put it back in. I had no idea you were supposed to do that, so I tried it his way and the level was way lower than I thought. Now I check it every other fill up. What other basic car stuff am I probably doing wrong without knowing?
Wiping the stick first got me too, same deal with my lawn mower last summer where I kept topping off the gas thinking it was low. Turns out I was reading the dipstick right after running it instead of letting it sit.
