My car's check engine light came on and the mechanic said I need a new catalytic converter

Honestly, my 2012 Honda Civic started shaking weird last Tuesday on I-5 near Seattle. Took it to a shop and they quoted me $1,400 to replace the catalytic converter, said it's clogged up. Anyone else run into this with older cars, or am I getting ripped off?

Yeah $1,400 sounds high for a Civic... check around at other shops first.

Good point about shopping around, but here's something I haven't seen anyone mention. That $1,400 quote from the dealer might actually include a new airbag or a SRS system reset, not just the bumper and paint. A lot of these newer Civics have sensors in the bumper that cost a fortune to calibrate after any repair. I'd ask the shop for a line by line breakdown of the parts and labor before you say no.

Nah, I gotta disagree a bit here. That quote sounds pretty normal for a catalytic converter on a 2012 Civic especially if the shop is using OEM parts or including labor for the o2 sensors that usually go bad too. People always think $1400 is a ripoff but that part alone is expensive because it has precious metals inside.
